Né à Francfort d’un père suisse et d’une mère allemande (Bethmann), il fonde en 1820 sa première entreprise de négoce bordelaise après avoir lancé avec son frère aîné, Louis-Philippe, une société d’importation (de Luze & C°) au 28, South William Street à New York. Il épouse à Bordeaux une écossaise, Georgina Johnston, qui lui donnera cinq fils dont quatre continueront avec succès ses entreprises viti-vinicoles.
